Common questions

Long COVID in Canada: frequently asked questions

What is long COVID?

Long COVID, which the Government of Canada calls post COVID-19 condition, is when symptoms continue or develop in the months after a COVID-19 infection. Common symptoms include fatigue, brain fog, shortness of breath, a fast heart rate and post exertional malaise (PEM), where activity triggers a delayed crash. According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, as of June 2023, 19% of adults in Canada who got COVID-19 had symptoms 3 or more months after infection.

How do I find a long COVID clinic in Canada?

See the Long COVID Clinics page: a province by province map and directory of long COVID clinics, hospital rehab programs, virtual care and phone lines. Each listing shows whether it’s free and whether you need a referral.

What should I bring to my doctor about long COVID?

Bring a written list of your symptoms and a clinician guide from the essential guides, like the Bateman Horne Center Clinical Care Guide, the #MEAction Pacing and Management Guide or the Long COVID Treatment Guide. Canada’s national guidelines (CAN-PCC) and the Government of Canada’s page for health professionals are also useful to share.

Can I get financial help or disability benefits for long COVID in Canada?

Possibly. If long COVID severely and persistently limits your daily activities, you may qualify for the federal Disability Tax Credit (form T2201). Realize, a Canadian charity, publishes a Roadmap for Disability Income Benefits for people with long COVID, plus tips for disability claims and returning to work. See Work, income & disability benefits.

How is long COVID connected to ME/CFS and POTS?

Many people with long COVID develop symptoms that overlap with, or meet the criteria for, myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), a form of dysautonomia. That’s why this directory includes ME/CFS and dysautonomia organizations such as the Bateman Horne Center, #MEAction, Solve ME/CFS Initiative, Dysautonomia International and the ME|FM Society of BC. Try searching “ME/CFS” or “POTS” above.

Where can I find long COVID support for kids and families in Canada?

Long Covid Kids and Long Covid Families share resources and support for children, parents and caregivers, and the RECOVER tip sheet helps parents prepare for a child’s doctor visit. Use the “Kids & families” filter above, or visit the Kids and long COVID page.

How can I take part in long COVID research in Canada?

Long Covid Studies lists current long COVID clinical trials, using data from ClinicalTrials.gov. The PLRC Registry can also match adults with long COVID studies. You can also see the studies and research page for opportunities open to people living in Canada.
