Questions to ask before joining a study

Taking part should never make you sicker. These questions help you decide if a study is a good fit.

  • Is it approved?Look for research ethics board approval, usually listed on the study page or consent form.
  • How much energy will it take?Ask about travel, visit length and any exercise testing, especially if you have post exertional malaise.
  • Can I do it from home? Many surveys and some studies are fully online. Ask if remote options or breaks are available.
  • Can I stop at any time? You can always withdraw. Your care should never depend on taking part.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I find long COVID studies in Canada?

Use the filters above to see studies by province or type. For more, Health Canada’s clinical trial search lists approved drug trials across Canada, Long COVID Web lists long COVID research, and REACH BC matches volunteers with studies in British Columbia.

Are there studies for ME/CFS, POTS or Lyme disease in Canada?

Yes. Use the Condition filter above. The Calgary Autonomic Investigation lab runs several POTS studies, and Open Medicine Foundation Canada’s StudyME registry matches people with ME/CFS and long COVID to new studies. Lyme disease studies open to patients are rarer in Canada, but you can help tick research through eTick or the University of Guelph, and search Health Canada’s trial database for new trials.

Can I take part in a long COVID study online?

Yes. Some studies and surveys are completed entirely online, like the University of York language processing study and the long COVID citizen science survey. Select “Online” above to see them.

Are there long COVID clinical trials in Canada?

Yes. The LC-REVITALIZE trial is testing upadacitinib in Montreal and Sherbrooke, Quebec, and York University in Toronto is testing a taurine supplement. Select “Clinical trials” above to see them.

Is it safe to join a study if I have post exertional malaise?

Ask the research team what the study involves before you agree. Studies with travel, long visits or exercise testing can trigger a crash. You can ask for breaks, remote options or to withdraw at any time.
